I recently had a client ask me about companies emailing them wanting to “fix their website speed” based on Google PageSpeed scores. When I dug into their site, I discovered something that perfectly illustrates why the website optimization industry is broken.

Their site scored 65 on mobile PageSpeed Insights. Sounds terrible, right? That’s what those spam companies were counting on.

But when I measured their actual user experience, real visitors were getting 1.17-second load times on mobile. That’s excellent performance – faster than most Fortune 500 sites.

For context, I tested PetSmart.com (a multi-billion dollar company with unlimited resources) and they score 30 on mobile PageSpeed. Yet their site works perfectly fine.

The Problem with Lab Scores

Google’s PageSpeed Insights runs artificial tests that simulate slow 3G networks and old phones. These lab conditions often have zero correlation with what your actual users experience.

This creates a massive disconnect that predatory optimization companies exploit. They’ll charge you $500-2000 to chase meaningless lab scores while your real users are already getting excellent performance.

I’ve seen businesses waste thousands on “speed fixes” that made no difference to actual user experience. Others ignore real performance issues because their lab scores look good.

What Actually Matters

After working through this with several clients, I realized most WordPress site owners are making critical decisions based on misleading or incomplete data. They’re either:

  • Wasting money on fake problems
  • Missing real performance bottlenecks
  • Making hosting decisions based on wrong information
  • Getting paralyzed by conflicting “expert” advice

Real performance measurement involves:

  • Actual load times your users experience (not simulations)
  • Database efficiency and query optimization
  • Hosting adequacy for your current needs
  • Genuine bottlenecks vs. artificial lab penalties

Why I Created the WordPress Performance Reality Check

Instead of asking clients to trust me with major projects, I wanted to offer something simple: honest clarity about what’s actually happening with their site.

The audit takes me 2 hours to run real diagnostics and costs $200. No strings attached – if your site’s running fine, I’ll tell you. If there are issues worth fixing, you’ll know exactly what they are and whether it’s worth addressing.

The process is straightforward:

  1. I measure baseline performance with real user simulation
  2. Get brief access to run diagnostic tools
  3. Deliver written analysis with honest recommendations

Three Possible Outcomes

Scenario 1: Your site is performing well (more common than you’d think)

  • I’ll confirm you’re good as-is
  • You save money on unnecessary “fixes”
  • You can confidently ignore spam optimization emails

Scenario 2: Minor optimizations would help

  • Clear identification of specific improvements
  • Professional guidance on priorities

Scenario 3: Significant issues need attention

  • Honest assessment: optimize vs. rebuild
  • Documentation of real problems affecting users
  • Roadmap for meaningful improvements

No Upselling, No BS

The audit stands alone. I’m not using it as a loss leader to sell bigger projects. Some sites need work, others don’t. I’d rather build trust by being honest about when work isn’t needed than chase every possible dollar.

This approach has saved clients money by proving their “slow” sites were actually performing well, while helping others identify genuine issues worth addressing.

The Bottom Line

Your WordPress site’s performance affects your business, but you shouldn’t make decisions based on misleading lab scores or fear-based sales tactics.

Whether you use my audit service or not, the key is getting real data about actual user experience. Don’t let artificial metrics drive expensive decisions about your business-critical website.

Want to know how your site actually performs? The WordPress Performance Reality Check gives you professional analysis without the sales pitch. Just honest facts about what’s really happening with your WordPress site.
